Learn how to enhance your art and technology work through sound technology and the sense of touch!

·      We can perceive sound through vibrational touch and via other structures in our bodies, like our chest.

·      Touch adds a powerful sense of presence and immersion in virtual and artistic settings.

·      We can create compelling content, and even music, for touch with special haptic devices and digital sound tools.

This workshop is an introduction to crafting haptic experiences using sound. This overview is valuable for individuals working in the arts and in technology, especially in the following areas:

·      art installation,

·      VR/AR/XR,

·      music composition,

·      sound design,

·      wearable technology,

·      interaction design, and

·      gestural control.

We will cover a range of topics accompanied by hands-on making, providing:

·      original theory,

·      custom digital tools in the software Max (Cycling ’74), and

·      access to different haptic devices.

You will learn:

·      core concepts regarding the somatic experience of sound

·      techniques, tips, and tools for creating haptic content, regarding:

o   body resonances

o   multichannel panning

o   virtual reality feedback

o   perceptual illusions

To participate, you will need to bring a LAPTOP equipped with the following elements:

·      A port or dongle for a headphone jack (3.5mm)

·      An installed version of the software Max by Cycling ’74:

No prior coding experience or experience with Max is necessary for participation.
